Beyond the Hype - Small Business Success

By: bashfoo

Status:
Approved

2010 has been a year of consolidation and rationalization for social media within the mix of accepted marketing methods. There are now hundreds of books written and published about social media, its impact for business and our thoughts of community.
Businesses have identified that stat-tracking software packages like Radian 6 and Alterian can provide statistics about consumer sentiment and can attempt to empirically calculate ROI, but they have also learned that the stats and how they are collected are highly flawed.
My presentation will briefly touch on these topics but will focus primarily on the "milkshake" of digital marketing techniques that has worked for both small businesses as well as large Fortune 100 companies that my company has worked with.

I am looking forward to again presenting to the fantastic group of Podcamp Ohio attendees.

FYI, I will be touching on WordPress, as well since that is the only web development/CMS tool that we use.

Location-based services: why you need to check in

By: Carolyn Maul

Status:

Curious about location-based services like Foursquare and Gowalla? They do seem to be the object of a lot of buzz lately, but will they ever gain mass appeal like Twitter and Facebook have done?

Take Foursquare, for example. It is just over a year old and doesn't even have 1 million users; yet venture capitalists are pouring $100 million into the social media newbie.

This session will provide an overview of location-based services (LBS) and tell you why you should take notice of them if you haven't already.

- What is the adoption rate of LBS, and who are the people using them?
- Do location-based services make sense for your business?
- How to integrate LBS into your existing social media marketing plans
- Measuring the success of LBS efforts

Building an Online Community

By: Carla Gesell-Streeter

Status:
Approved

While some bloggers and podcasters concentrate on building their personal brand, others (like Girlfriendology.com and Hoperatives.com) work towards building an online community centered around a central theme. In this session, Debba Haupert of Girlfriendology and Tom Streeter & Carla Gesell-Streeter of Hoperatives will discuss and share the techniques they use to bring together members of their two online communities. Though girlfriends and believers in better beer (in Cincinnati and beyond) can be very different, Debba, Tom and Carla will compare and contrast their community building successes, their misses and their upcoming plans.

(Due to a prior commitment, we are requesting a morning session.)

What exactly is this GPL thing?

By: Alvin Borromeo

Status:
Approved

WordPress is licensed under the GNU General Public License ("GPL"). That means it's open sourced. But with every license, there are terms and conditions you must abide by.

Those terms are widely misunderstood and debated. In the WordPress community, you've got WordPress on one side and some premium theme developers on the other.

My talk will simply point out the issues. Then I'll step out of the way as hopefully the audience battles out the issues. That is, I'm not solving anything or giving out any legal advice with this "primer".
